Professor Kirkham qualified as a doctor in New Zealand then travelled to the United Kingdom where he trained in rheumatology at Guy’s Hospital. In 1991 he became a Consultant Rheumatologist in Adelaide, Australia, and subsequently Sydney. His studies of immune mechanisms of inflammatory arthritis focused on IL-17 pathways including the first demonstration of anti-IL-17 efficacy in an animal model.

Appointed Consultant Rheumatologist, Guy’s & St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in 2000, his research areas are in IL-17/23 immunology and enhancing best practice in routine care. He has a special interest in the immunology and treatment of Psoriatic Arthritis, working closely with the St John’s Institute of Dermatology. In 2013, his RA Centre service received the inaugural British Society of Rheumatology Outstanding Best Practice Award. His team was named by GRAPPA as one of seven international best practice centres in 2016. He was a member of the 2018 NICE Guidelines for Diagnosis and Management of rheumatoid arthritis in adults.
