Dermatopathologist, Founder and Medical Director of Cockerell Dermatopathology,
Clay J. Cockerell, MD, MBA, JD is a board-certified dermatopathologist with nationally recognized expertise in inflammatory dermatoses and cutaneous vasculitic disorders. He is the Founder and Medical Director of Cockerell Dermatopathology, a high-volume reference laboratory serving clinicians nationwide, and is widely known for his work in clinicopathologic correlation and diagnostic accuracy.
Dr. Cockerell is the Founder and Program Director of the Lake Granbury Dermatology Residency Program (Health Education Services/Lake Granbury Medical Center), where he oversees resident education with a focus on integrating pathology into clinical decision-making. He is a Clinical Professor of Dermatology and Pathology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where he previously served as Director of the Division of Dermatopathology for more than two decades. His additional academic appointments include Adjunct Professor of Dermatology, Adjunct Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine (Dermatology) at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, and Instructor in Dermatopathology at Baylor Scott & White.
Dr. Cockerell has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and is a frequent invited speaker at national and international medical meetings. In addition to his medical training, he holds two MBA degrees and a Juris Doctor, providing a unique interdisciplinary perspective on diagnostic reasoning, risk assessment, medical education, and patient safety.
