Dr. David Karp, MD Karp MD, PhD

Professor and Chief of the Rheumatic Diseases Division, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

Dr. David Karp is a Distinguished Teaching Professor and Chief of the Rheumatic Diseases Division at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX, where he holds the Harold C. Simmons Chair in Arthritis Research and the Fredye Factor Chair in Rheumatoid Arthritis Research. His research interests include the role of genetics and the environment in the causes of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Dr. Karp’s recent investigation has focused on markers that predict development of disease in people at risk for lupus, as well as the direction of a major clinical trial to prevent lupus in such individuals.

Dr. Karp has published over 100 research articles on rheumatology and immunology. He has received support for his research from the National Institutes of Health, the Lupus Research Alliance, the Arthritis Foundation and industry. He serves on the steering committee of the Lupus Clinical Investigator Network. Dr. Karp has been President of both the American College of Rheumatology and the Rheumatology Research Foundation.
