Frank Buttgereit is a senior consultant and deputy head of the Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology at the Charité, University Medicine in Berlin. He also directs a liaison research group at the Deutsche Rheumaforschungszentrum.

Dr. Buttgereit has expertise in the treatment of a wide variety of musculoskeletal and rheumatic diseases, including osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, myositis and different forms of vasculitis. He is also internationally recognised for his work on mechanisms of glucocorticoid actions and on bioenergetics of immune functions and has been principal investigator in a variety of clinical studies on effects of anti-inflammatory agents in patients with rheumatic disease.

He was or is currently on the editorial board of several journals, including Ann Rheum Dis, Rheumatology, Arthritis Research & Therapy, Z Rheumatol and Inflammopharmacology, and author of more than 330 publications.
