Dr. Joel Kremer MD

Joel M Kremer received his MD degree at Temple University School of Medicine where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. He did his medical residency and fellowship at Albany Medical Center Hospital and Albany Medical College.  He was in full-time academic medicine from 1979 through 2001 and served as Professor and Head of the Division of Rheumatology at AMC. In 2001 he became the Director of Research at The Center for Rheumatology in Albany, New York.  In 2005, he became the Pfaff Family Professor of Medicine at The Albany Medical College where he has trained fellow and residents without interruption since 1979.

Dr Kremer has been engaged in some seminal investigations on the long-term clinical efficacy and toxicity profile of methotrexate in patients with RA. His work at AMC lead to the ACR developing the guidelines for monitoring MTX-associated liver toxicity. These guidelines were important in the wide dissemination of MTX as the cornerstone drug to treat RA.  He has authored several publications on the use of omega-3 fatty acids in RA and has also studied and published on many biologic and novel agents for the treatment of this disease. He has published >330 peer reviewed manuscripts, 12 book chapters and 5 book editorships. He is the recipient of the Engalitcheff Award of the Arthritis Foundation in 1998 for his work on MTX for “outstanding contributions to patient welfare in the past decade.” He is an invited speaker at a variety of CME events including many at the ACR and EULAR. He is a Master of the American College of Rheumatology. In 2022 he received the Distinguished Clinical Investigator Award from the ACR.

Dr Kremer has served on numerous ACR committees including the Committee for Publication of Arthritis and Rheumatism, the Ethics committee of the ACR, and the annual meeting planning committee. He is past president of the Northeast region of the ACR from 1992-1993. He is the founder of Corrona (now CorEvitas), a large US registry collecting data on rheumatic diseases which has developed many publications for the rheumatology literature.  He is the president and founder of The Corrona Research Foundation.
