Roy L Fleischmann MD
Dr Fleischmann received his MD from the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center and is board certified in internal medicine with subspecialty certification in rheumatology. In 1975, he joined the Division of Rheumatology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and started a private practice in rheumatology on the campus. He has been active in the University teaching program mentoring students, residents, and fellows.
He established a clinical research center on the development of new drugs for the treatment of RA, PsA, ankylosing spondylitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, gout, and osteoarthritis. More than 1000 clinical studies have been performed in the center. Dr Fleischmann has authored over 250 manuscripts, on the management of RA, which have been published in peer-reviewed journals and authored over 400 abstracts, which have been presented at rheumatology meetings worldwide. Dr Fleischmann has helped design, implement and report studies on virtually every medication approved for treatment of RA and has been involved in the development of the clinical trial development programs of the three approved JAK inhibitors. Dr Fleischmann was an early proponent of the aggressive treatment of RA and measuring disease activity to guide treatment decisions.
He is a Master of the American College of Rheumatology, an Overseas Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, a former President of the Texas Rheumatism Association and the Dallas–Fort Worth Rheumatism Association. He’s a reviewer for the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, Arthritis Rheumatism, Annals of Rheumatic Disease and the Journal of Rheumatology. He’s Editor of Rheumatology and Therapy and was Associate Editor for Rheumatology. He’s on the Editorial Board of Annals of Rheumatic Disease, RMD Open and The Journal of Rheumatology. He was selected as the top 5% of reviewers for Arthritis and Rheumatology, Arthritis Care and Research and Annals of Internal Medicine. He’s been recognized as an outstanding clinician by D Magazine and Texas Monthly and frequently selected as one of America’s best physicians.
